Ladies and Gentlemen Miss Universe 2010 is…
By Candice Bromfield
Viva Mexico! On Monday, August 23, live from the city of lights in Las Vegas, Nevada, Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete was crowned Miss Universe 2010.
National Costume and the first cut
One of the great highlights of this international beauty pageant was the parade of costumes from the 83 contestants competing this year. Some were blah and didn’t get me excited, while others were…let’s say interesting. Then, there were the amazing costumes. My favourites were from Jamaica, Mexico, Curacao and Haiti. Congrats to Thailand for winning the best costume! (Also voted Most Photogenic).
Brett Michaels and Natalie Morales were great as pageant co-hosts. Natalie remained composed throughout whilst Brett, on the other hand, was floating on cloud nine, surrounded by all the beautiful women. A natural reaction, I suppose. Then bam! within moments the hosts made the big announcement and 83 contestants were drastically cut down to 15.
Top 15 finalists and swimwear
The top 15 finalists were announced: Puerto Rico, Ukraine, Mexico, Belgium, Ireland, South Africa, France, Australia, Jamaica, Russia, Albania, Colombia, Guatemala, Czech Republic, and Philippines (She got the loudest cheers from the crowd). Then there was the attention grabbing segment- the swimsuit parade! Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps received the highest score. With her tremendously toned hour-glass figure, she totally rocked the swimwear as her confidence, charm and poise shone through. Trailing closely behind her was Mexico who had the second highest swimwear score. Surprisingly, Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti, both favourites, did not make the top 15.
Top 10 Finalists and the Evening Gown
The beauties then paraded their evening gowns alongside a film clip describing in detail the gown and why they chose to wear it. That was fun! The four who stood out to me were: Mexico, Puerto-Rico, Philippines and Jamaica. The asymmetrical fire red, mixed with the light lilac/ pink, the silver flowy and dramatic shimmer and the lacy turquoise was breathtakingly beautiful on stage. Mexico ended up with the highest score and I agree. Red’s my favourite colour and it was an overall GORGEOUS piece.
The remaining six finalists included: Australia, Ukraine, Albania, Ireland, South Africa, and Guatemala. Speaking of Guatemala, I’ll admit, she has an incredibly beautiful face but simply made a bad, bad choice in evening wear. It just didn’t look very “pageant like,” was too tight (she could hardly walk) and had way too much chest exposure. Sorry! Not a good look for pageants.
Top 5 and the all important final question
The excitement intensified when 10 contestants were cut in half. I was overall pleased with the results but was hoping Ireland and Guatemala (irrespective of her dress) would have made it. Miss Mexico had the first question, which was asked by Evan Lysacek on children and the Internet. She gave her answer, via translator. Overall, her response was very good.
Then my biggest disappointment occurred. Miss Philippines’ question came from William Baldwin, and she actually had the easiest one. All the other ladies gave outstanding answers, but Miss Philippines response was simply dreadful. When asked, “What is one big mistake that you made in your life and what did you do to make it right?, ” she quite diplomatically confessed that she had never made a major mistake in her life. Really Venus? She was clearly nervous, inarticulate and fake, and although she was one of the favourites, she didn’t manage to impress the audience, as her answer was too evasive. I’m still waiting for an answer!!!
There have been mixed reactions to Miss Jamaica’s answer regarding the death penalty. It was liked by some and taken as too opinionated by a few judges and critics. She took a strong stance against the death penalty with the mention of God. I’ve known Yendi since we were three years old, and she has always remained true to her beliefs, values and morals. I applaud her for doing this!
She made her mark as the lone black contestant to secure a top spot, a positive symbol for the many young black women watching at home.
The Moment is finally here
The big moment arrived and Miss Philippines, not surprisingly, became the 4th Runner-Up followed by Miss Ukraine (3rd Runner-Up), Miss Australia (2nd Runner-Up), Miss Jamaica (1st Runner-Up) and the winner was, of course, Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete, the second consecutive Latina to wear the crown. Congratulations to all 83 contestants for making it this far and to the newly crowned 2010 Miss Universe, Jimena. It is my hope that you fully enjoy your reign!

Venus Raj diplomatically answered the question she was asked. Not impressive, true, but she answered the question nonetheless. No need to wait for another answer. But, maybe you should wait for Jimena Navarrete to answer. After all, she never answered the question in the first place. Replay videos if you must; the judge asked her for the EFFECTS of unsupervised internet use, and did you ever hear her talk about even one single effect? No. Something might have been implied in her answer, but I thought Miss Universe questions must be answered DIRECTLY if one must win the crown? Clearly not, huh?
Queen Candice, you have done a fantastic job in detailing the entire pageant from the beginning to the end. Thanks for your article. It was very interesting and enlightening.
Ms. Bromfield, wonderful article. Given your friendship with Miss Jamaica, I found your article to be very unbiased and very well written.
Keep up the good work..
It may be that the answers to the final questions were what tipped the scale for jimena. her question was a tricky one but the question asked of yendi was a loaded question and any answer she gave would have caused a division in the audience because some people are pro- and others against- when it comes to death penalties. pretty much everyone agrees that children should either not be on the internet or that internet use should be monitored and limited for children. it was the luck of the draw that yendi had that question i guess but she came through with an answer that was true to her beliefs which of course is the jamaican way of doing things. respect.
in every other part of the pageant yendi was a leading light and she made every jamaican proud. in this case it has nothing to do with me being jamaican descent. yendi really did deserve to win 1st prize in my eyes. 2nd place is nothing to underrate and it doesn’t diminish in any way yendi’s exceptional beauty, charm, intelligence and integrity. those are qualities she brought into the pageant and they will remain with her for life.
big up yourself yendi, you are an exceptional woman in every way. jamaica is rightfully proud of you today. may god continue to bless you in your life journey as you go from strength to strength.
Queen Candice, you have done a fantastic job in detailing the entire pageant from the beginning to the end. Thanks for your article. It was very interesting and enlightening.
If I had not viewed the Miss Universe 2010 live. This article by Candice covered all that I needed to have known.
Congratulations Candice, you deserve an award for this. Keep it as pure as this.
Well written article Candice
You were able to make a reader feel as if they were there experiencing it first hand.
Agree with your comments about Miss Guatamela’s Evening Wear and Miss Philipines disastrous faux pax.
As for Yendi’s commented being too opinionated, when can the decision about ending a persons life and about justice be summarized quickly and without passion.
The depth of your character and insight into people continues to grow daily.
There is integrity and passion in all you speak of and you remain composed and unbiased.
Thank you Candice for your observations and insights and accurate depictions
As for Ashes comment perhaps, subject to perception and projection, you are the only one unable to accept the answer and am feeling most do not feel it was implied.
Guess it depends on your idea of ‘direct’
I absolutely loved this article Candice. A former pageant queen?? I can certainly tell. You captured everything succintly and I LOVE your flavour and style. I wanted to keep reading more and more. Great choice of pictures too. I wanted Jamaica to win, but these things happen and such is life. Again, WONDERFUL piece.
Ms. Bromfield this was a very detailed article. I missed the broadcast due to travel but your recount of the events brought me up to speed. You seem to be knowledgable on pageant routine and strategy. Your comment on Ms. Phillippines I found to be unbias. What human is without mistake? So you game me the judges perspective in that regard. All in all excellent article and looking forward to more of your coverage of such events and more.
this is a very well written account of the events at the miss universe pageant. All i have to say i am extremely proud of my sister, and i know this is only the beginning of her career love you yendi!!!
Wonder Wonderful Wonderful uniased article. I really enjoyed the read. I watched the pageant and after reading your article, it brought me back right to the night. You are indeed an awseome writer and I would love to see many more of these.
Stay beautiful as ever. You are a true woman Candice Bromfield.
Great Article Candy, I actually missed the live broadcast. Beautiful, pictorial discription I like you choice of words, funny and informative at the same time. Great job!!!
@Ashes: Jiminez didn’t answer the question directly because it is a leading question by design. If she had answered the question directly it would have been a disaster for her. She used a lot of spin on her answer and i guess that is the way to do it if you want to win the judges favour. Venus didn’t spin her answer, she just outright lied to get around the binds and it cost her. Yendi didn’t spin her answer but she did tell the truth and i love her for that because it didn’t penalize her, if anything it made her even better to me. The others gave glib answers but that doesn’t work in contests, the judges want a little more than that.
Unfortunately, some of the questions were so loaded that any answer given had to be a divisive one. Yendi’s question was triple-loaded. Jesinta’s question was also triple-loaded and frankly those two questions are unanswerable when you really think about the issues, you could argue about them for days and not come up with a decent way to respond. The fact that both of them came up with good spins is remarkable; respect to both of them for that! I feel bad for Anna and Venus because they both drew loaded personal questions, but in a way they had it easy because their questions are commonly asked in interviews for corporate jobs. Venus ruined her chances at a 2nd or 3rd prize; if she had spun her question properly, she would probably have beaten Yendi in the judges’ eyes.
Personally i like Yendi’s answer the best by far. In a moment of presha rather than play the game of spin and walkaround she dash weh dem psychology tactics and just gave them the true true answer straight from the heart. ONLY A JAMAICAN WOULD DO THAT!!!! :cD For that alone Yendi might be #2 to the judges but to me she’s #1 all the way. And her accent is killing me i love it so bad.
Candice I only look for one thing when i read anything and its the truth and you have a very truthful article. If you want my honest answer I think ms.jamacia should have never been asked such a negative question . When dealing with the universe level overstanding we should be focusing on natural elements that can deal with real issues like hunger and h.i.v but besides that it was a beautiful event. It was usually a very politic driven outcome but it seems to be faiding out of that stage and evolving to the REAL ms. universe and not some barbie puppet u know … well anyways keep up the good reporting and ill be reading your articles in the future , One Love .
Jamacia didnt have to win on t.v. she won in our hearts because we all know the struggle we all go through and to make it to the highest level of compition shows the power of hard work.
A great article Candice. I agree with “Love Jamaica” that you captured the show very well. I watched the show and I could hardly breathe when Miss Jamaica and Miss Mexico were the only two contestants reamining. I think both are two beautiful young ladies and deserve to win, however, I was quite disappointed when Miss Jamaica did not get the crown. “so close and yet so far” Such is life.
Sis I must say I really enjoyed the article every inch of it. I really am proud of how unbiased and honest it was. Truly refreshing article that made me want more….I expect there will be more to come (articles that is). Truly proud to be your sis! Love yah!
Excellent article! I am very proud you Candice. I enjoyed every bit of this. You are a beauty queen so I guess this comes naturally to you. Great insights and keep up the awesome work. Can’t wait to see more Sway pieces.
Wow! Great article Candice, very descriptive and totally unbiased.
When I first heard Jimena’s answer to her question, I, like many others thought that it was not a good answer and didn’t address the question posed. After thinking about it though, I realized that her answer was quite brilliant! She basically implies that if not trained in the right way, the kids won’t use the internet properly, and not using the internet properly is in fact an effect of unsupervised youth using the internet. She may not have gone into details of what “not using the internet properly” meant, but the effect was addressed, and as Dion mentioned, she did put a good spin on the answer. On the other hand,I also thought Yendi’s answer was brilliant. The question was waaaaay too loaded though, and I’m not sure if she’d get most of the judges agreeing with her if she didn’t put a spin on her answer and do some slight evasive tactics like Miss Mexico.
All in all I think Yendi totally rocked in every aspect of the Pageant, and I think she deserves the crown… Maybe I’m biased, but I think she outshone every other contestant! Congratulations to Yendi, I hope she continues to make Jamaica proud!
Very good article, Candice. You made the reader feel like they were actually at the Pageant. For those of us that weren’t able to see the Pageant, this was the next best thing. Keep up the good work.
Excellent article! I am very proud you Candice. I enjoyed every bit of this. You are a beauty queen so I guess this comes naturally to you. Great insights and keep up the awesome work. Can’t wait to see more Sway pieces.
Well written Candice. You did a thorough job. However I do not agree with you that Miss Mexico gave a very good answer to her question. She did not answer the question. The question asked for impact of the internet on children. I am still waiting for her to give one impact. Did I miss something? I stand corrected. Good analysis of the evening. I am very proud of you.
Candice, very well done and extremely balanced reporting of the event. For the readers who did not watch the pageant, you have been able to “bring to life” the spirit of the evening in both words and pictures.
Love your analysis.
Well written article Candice…
You were able to make a reader feel as if they were there. For those of ua that weren;t able to see the pageant, detailing the entire pageant from the beginning to the end was the next best thing. Very well written, alot of energy passion and time put towards this. Keep up the great work!
This was quite an enjoyable read! Very well written and funky! Loved the humour as it showed your personality. I watched the pageant and your story greatly captured it well. I wish you nothing but continued success and hope to see many more articles for Sway and elsewhere. Your’re truly gifted.
I see that you know Yendi for many years. That’s great. I Guess beauties surround themselves with each other.
MISS JAMAICA CLEARLY SHOULD BE THE WINNER!SHE HAD THE HIGHEST COMBINED SCORES AND A BETTER ANSWER THAN XIMENA,MISS MEXICO,WHICH IN MY OPINION GAVE AN INCOMPLETE ANSWER!THE MAN ASKED HER FOR “EFFECTS”,SHE DID NOT GIVE HIM ANY EFFECTS.ALL SHE GAVE WAS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTERNET AND HOW GOOD FAMILY VALUES CAN INFLUENCE PROPER USAGE!NOT A BAD ANSWER BUT IT WAS INCOMPLETE!JAMAICA WAS FLAWLESS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PAGEANT!HER QUESTION WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT BUT SHE GAVE A WITTY ANSWER!REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE JUDGES THINK,YENDI IS THE REAL MISS UNIVERSE 2010!
Fanatastic article lovely. I loved every bit of it. Was hoping Yendi would win and I thought she was robbed but that’s just my view. This was a beautiful piece and I am proud of you. Keep up the great work and keep writing more. You have the knack for it.
Your article was well written you covered all areas of the competition. It was done in such a way that you as the reader felt as if you were actually present at the function, as honest & unbiased as possible. Great work. Kudos too for Yendi! She did Jamaica proud.
Thanks Candice for your very insightful and unbiased analysis. you’ve done a good job of covering the major aspects of the pageant. Dissapointed that Yendi never won, but 1st runner up is still a good accomplishment. Keep up the good work candy and I look forward to your other articles.
Hey Candice,
This was a great article after reading I wished that I have got to watch the beauty pagent that passed. This article was easy to read and kept me entertained from beginning to end. Adding the pictures of the contestents definately added to me being entertained reading this.
This is an EXCELLENT piece Candice! I enjoyed reading this from beginning to end. You clearly captured the essence of the beauty pageant. I look forward to seeing more articles from you in Sway and other publications.
A special congratulations to my favorite contestant, Yendi Phillipps!!! Yendi you are absolutely AMAZING - one of a kind.
Well Written. Candice. you broke down and identified most of, or even all of the highlights of the night. In my opinion, Mexico didn’t answer her question either. But Yendi Phillips, did Jamaica PROUD!!! and even was an inspiration for future contestants of the pageant. Yendi Performed Well and we can now use the expression; To the UNIVERSE …………..rather than to the WORLD, with how well she did.
This is a great article. I loved it so much. Great choice of words and superb anlysis. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next piece.
I thoroughly enjoyed this article Candice. You captured this event well and I enjoyed your writing style. Kudos! Keep up the awesome work and I am really proud of you.
Great article Candice,
I didn’t get a chance to watch the pageant either but your depiction was enlightening and entertaining. Great description of the gowns, now I wish I had seen them. I like that you wrote very unbiasedly (is that a word?) even though you had a friend in the pageant. It was also nice to see it from your point of view which was “real” as opposed to the staged, fake, commentary styles that we are used to.
Keep up the good work Miss Thang!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
YOU WILL ACHIEVE MORE AND MORE IN YOUR LIFE
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT JOB FOR YOU
TAKE CARE
WAKE UP ALWAYS
Ms. Candice, great article, I didnt get the chance to watch the pageant but from this article I know every thing that went on. Being an owner of a pageant, I believe pageants are great platforms for women to express themselfs. Well done.
Outstanding article Ms. Bromfield, I think your exemplary writing and unbiased approach demonstrated the highest level of fairness, which reflects the diversity of our society, community and Humanity alike.
I suggest you continue doing what you’re doing with unparalleled dedication and admiration.
Tremendously done, keep up the great work your doing.
Great article Candi and I applaud your Jamaican sisters stance on the death penalty. There should be more believers like her. The Commandments are exactly that, or they would have been called The Ten Recommendations.
As for my Philipino Sister, I didn’t see the event, but if the question was worded as ‘major mistake’ I can understand her answer. There are many people who make mistakes, but are not major ones.
Anyway, off my soapbox, I look forward to reading your articles.
Candice
Your analysis of the pageant was very attractive and enchanting. Greatly admired.
Great Job! I missed the show but through your article I felt I had a great breakdown of the nights events. Well done.
Candice!! Wow, great article. Do you have any idea how proud I am??? Your piece was not only informative but so on point and extremely well written (you went easy on the conjunctions as well as the prepositional phrases.). I suggest that someone—anyone—tell Terry McMillian, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison to watch their back! Candice Bromfield is about to blow up. Not only is she an excellent writer but she is entirely too cute! God Bless, Dr. K.
Biased article…totally biased and it is solely based in the writer’s own perception. I would prefer to dig deeper into the very reason why such contestant expressed an answer to a stupid question. Miss Philippines was honest when she said she never had a major mistake in her life. What do you want her to say? That she lost her virginity at a young age? The truth is there are a lot of unfortunate events that happened in her life. To cite an example, she was born out of wedlock. That’s not her mistake either. She was almost dethroned as Miss Philippines due to her citizenship issue but that’s also not her mistake. Go and ask her the same question and she will definitely give you the same answer. Did Miss Mexico even answer her question? Miss Jamaica is sexy and maybe outstanding in the Q & A portion but she is definitely not fit to wear the crown. Miss Universe runner up can be Miss World but a Miss World runner can never be a Miss Universe…
well, ms. venus raj showed her sincerity in answering the question..if she did elaborate her answer..she might have placed 2nd or 1st perhaps the title…..for me,the question is too personal…who would like to tell the world his or her mistakes anyway??even president bush did not answer the question….do you think you can recall all your experiences in just 30 seconds???
“What is one big mistake that you made in your life and what did you do to make it right?
I solved my problem by strengthening the belief that life is good…for God is life..therefore God is good.
the question given to miss philippines, maria venus raj was the simplest, trickiest , yet the hardest question to answer. Have done a reseach about the question: “what is one big mistake that you made in your life?”, and has been given to prominent people and celebrities in the US, the likes of Pres. Bush, a lot of TV personalities and Journalists, and not one gave a concrete answer, for no one would like to divulge their biggest mistake in public. Who would anyway, would you candice? Now who’s inarticulate and fake?
Hello Candice,
How come you were able to write these all down without being so open-minded. Venus Raj, Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up, answered the question in a very honest manner. You might perceive it as lacking, but you don’t know more of the Filipino culture we have. If you would ask Venus, she did not even have that MAJOR — meaning, the grandest, the super — mistake because she is a very positive person. She only considers bad consequences of her decisions as CHALLENGES, that is, according to her. And with regard to you, having said that the question given to her was the easiest one, I beg to disagree with that. Even the US President was not able to answer the question; the wisests did the same thing too. Questions given to other contestants can all be read on newspapers, we don’t know some of them get from one. If you would analyze it more, Venus’ question was too personal, and in that very little span of time, how can you manage to think of the major mistake you’ve had.
Venus’ answer was far better than whoever would answer the question very immediately. I’m not being biased here, but I guess, only those who have the brains can understand what Venus answer was all about.
Candice
Great job in detailing the pageant. I did not get to see the pageant
when it aired so I have been reading a lot of articles looking to be
brought up to speed. However, no article has been able to cover all I
wanted to know. Your article was clear, interesting and informative!
Thanks for the link. I will surely pass it on!!
Dear Candice,
Your article was well balanced and gave an unbiased view of the entire event. As her Uncle, I an proud of Yendi and happy for Jamaica. Yendi is an advocate for God, always and in all ways. Thank you for covering this event so vividly and we wish you every success in your endeavours.
Herb…
If I were to answer Ms. Philippines Final Question:
I am a person who commits a lot of mistakes! However, I am grateful to all of my mistakes because it made me a better person today. I am here in this pageant and representing my country and all fellow men because to all of my mistakes.
My mistakes are my opportunities to GROW, IMPROVE, LEARN and to INNOVATE.
I am grateful that I endure the consequences of all my mistakes and failures.
Representing my country is my success! Thanks to all of my mistakes
Candice… You did a wonderful job. This article deserves TOP VIEWED HONOR
2011 miss universe is from ANGOLA. So proud of her she represented africa really well!!!!
