It was a very big night for women on Sunday’s broadcast of The American Music Awards. The show opened with a dance track performance by French mega-DJ/Producer David Guetta and Hip-Hop’s reigning queen, Nicki Minaj. Viewers on Twitter seemed to have been less than impressed with the performance that started out with “Turn Me On” then transitioned to “Super Bass” albeit that she had eye catching speakers strapped to her buttocks. Couch potato opinion played little role in the voting process because this rap phenomenon went home with the AMA titles of “Favourite Hip-Hop Artist” and “Best Hip-Hop Album” for Pink Friday. Nicki, you go ‘head and take your Roman’s Revenge on all the naysayers. Multiple personalities and all, you’re doing your thing!

British crooner Adele picked up three awards including “Favourite Adult Contemporary Album”, “Favourite Female Pop/Rock Artist” and “Favourite Pop/Rock Album” although she wasn’t in the building to accept any of her trophies as she continues to recover from vocal cord surgery. However, to satiate our need for memorable vocal performances (amid what appeared to be a sea of lip-synching) was Kelly Clarkson’s return to the award show arena with her satirical performance of “Mr. Know It All” that poked fun at all the exaggerated tabloid stories that have popped up over the years. Katy Perry, dripping in cosmic cotton candy pink had the audience hanging on her every word as she belted out her latest ballad, “The One That Got Away”. It was a very stripped down performance that reminded us that Katy has very strong vocal ability and isn’t just a bunch of California Dreams.

Taylor Swift was the biggest winner of the night coming away with “Favourite Country Female Artist” and “Favorite Country Album” before winning the highest accolade of the evening, “Favourite Artist of the Year”. She was putridly overly excited and dripping with humility as she exclaimed, “This is the craziest thing that has ever happened to me! Fans, please never change. I can’t believe this is happening to me!” Uh, yes you can Taylor. You’ve won over 90 awards for your three studio albums in your relatively short but amazing career. I love you, but you need to hang out with Mariah and up your diva game a little.

Despite all these great accomplishments by women at this year’s AMAS, the female that had the most public reaction was the original Fly Girl herself, Ms. Jenny from the Block. Jennifer Lopez, with her sinfully amazing 40-year old body stepped out and shook her insured assets all over that AMA stage with three tear-away wardrobe changes that had cougars everywhere cheering her on, and men of all ages thanking God that Marc Anthony is such an idiot, making it acceptable to swoon without guilt. While she came under fire by the typical I’m-never-going-to-look-like-her-at-40-so-FML demographic, I think J.Lo has more Swagu right now then most of our pots can handle!

Everybody criticizing J.Lo would chop their foot off to look that good at 40. So really - hush. #AMAS” via @darlingnicky999 on Twitter

Judge rules on Occupy Toronto

“Judge: You can “occupy” Toronto without actually occupying Toronto. #OccupyToronto” via @darlingnicky999 on Twitter

All eviction notices handed out to Occupy Toronto protestors who have set up camp at St. James Park in the city are enforceable as of 9 a.m. Monday morning as a judge rules that the right to take over a city park with tents and sleeping bags is NOT protected under Section 2 of the Charter of Human Rights.

With the occupation now going on five weeks, local residents and businesses have expressed their point of view that their right to live and enjoy the neighbourhood peacefully has been infringed upon by the presence of the tent city that has gone up at the park, and the judge sympathized with their complaints. The position is that the use of tents does not enhance any expression of idea associated with the Occupy Toronto movement.

In other news, camping was a popular choice last Friday night outside H&M downtown where hundreds of people lined up for Versace’s special collection designed for the Swedish low-priced clothing retailer was launched.

Listen, you can’t tell us Torontonians that we’re not passionate about stuff!!
